Privacy Policy (UK Walk Nomad)

Last updated: 9 October 2026

This policy explains how user information is handled in the smartphone app "UK Walk Nomad" (the "App"). The developer ("we") respects the privacy of App users and handles information in accordance with the policy set out below.

2. Information We Collect and Why

Type of informationSource / methodPurpose
Step count data (read-only) Android Health Connect Your step count is converted into the distance you can travel within the App and used as a virtual travel distance on the in-app map. We do not collect or use your actual GPS location.
In-app virtual location (in-game coordinates) Locations you tap on the in-game map, or destination coordinates calculated within the game These in-game coordinates (not your device's real GPS location) are sent via Firebase Cloud Functions to external APIs for: checking whether Street View is available at that point (Google Maps Platform: Street View Static API metadata only — the actual imagery is shown inside the Google Maps app, and we never receive the image data itself); and, for the small number of locations that have no pre-written comment on your device, generating an arrival comment (Google Gemini API).
Anonymous identifier (anonymous auth ID) Firebase Authentication (anonymous sign-in) Used to apply a daily rate limit per user to Cloud Functions calls; Firestore stores only a usage count against this ID. It is not linked to your name, email address, or any other information that identifies you.
Device / app integrity information Firebase App Check (Play Integrity) Used to detect fraudulent requests or a tampered app, and to prevent unauthorised access to Cloud Functions.
Game progress data (step balance, earned badges, travel history, settings, etc.) Local database on your device (Room / DataStore) Stored only on your device as data required for the App to function. It is never sent to our servers.
Backup of game progress data Android OS's standard Auto Backup for Apps If backup is enabled on your device's Google account, Android OS automatically backs up this on-device data. This is an OS-level feature; the App itself does not independently access or send your Google account information. If you sign in with the same Google account after a device change, Android restores this data automatically.
Purchase information (in-app purchase) Google Play Billing Library Used to check the purchase status of a one-time in-app item that unlocks the full route. The transaction itself is processed by Google Play; we never receive your payment card details or other payment information. A purchase token is sent to our server only to verify the purchase.
Feedback (free-text message) Text (up to 200 characters), category, and an optional related place name that you choose to enter and submit from the Feedback screen in the App Stored in Firestore via Firebase Cloud Functions so we can correct errors in arrival comments and improve their content over time. This is linked to the anonymous ID above, but not to your name, email address, or other information that identifies you. Because this is free text, content you choose to enter could incidentally include information about yourself. Submitting feedback is optional and all other App features remain available if you do not submit any.

3. Information We Do Not Collect

4. Third-Party Services

The App uses the following external services (all provided by Google). Please also review each provider's own privacy policy.

5. Retention and Deletion

6. Children's Privacy

The App is not directed at any specific age group and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13 (or under 14 in South Korea). As described above, the information the App collects is centred on an anonymous identifier and on-device data that does not identify an individual.

6a. Your Rights (UK GDPR)

Because the App is offered in the United Kingdom, the UK GDPR and the Data Protection Act 2018 apply. The App is designed so that we hold no information that directly identifies you (we process an anonymous identifier only). Within the limits of what we hold, you have the right to request access to, correction of, or deletion of data linked to your anonymous identifier, to object to or restrict its processing, and to lodge a complaint with the Information Commissioner's Office (ico.org.uk). To exercise these rights, contact us at the address below. Our legal basis for the processing described above is the performance of the service you requested (Art. 6(1)(b) UK GDPR) and our legitimate interest in keeping the service secure (Art. 6(1)(f) UK GDPR).

7. Security

All communication with external services uses encrypted connections such as HTTPS. Access to Cloud Functions and Firestore is protected by Firebase App Check and security rules.

8. Changes to This Policy

This policy may be updated to reflect changes in law or in the App's features. Any updated policy takes effect once posted on this page.
